Magic

Such a question, I ask myself every day… Do you still believe in Magic?

There have been days, when I did not believe in the goodness of the world,

Days when the fabric of myself, and the ties that knit me to others, seemed thin and fraying.

There have been days where it felt apparent the Divine Author/Artists of the Universe are only interested in writing tragi-comdedies, melodramas, and cautionary tales; only interested in painting the abstract, the mundane, the grotesque.

There have been days when I did not believe in Beauty,

Days when I did not believe in Love. Yet.

I could not escape the Magic.

It snakes around me in seaweed tidal drift,

hangs on my neck like little brothers,

burrows through aortic highways,

branching down the sciatic nerve,

pools in the soles of my feet.

It could be Power, It could be Purpose.

It could be Anything.

The precognitive wisdom of DnA, stacking cell on hollow cell establishing nails on a hand that will not need them for months. The fractal kaleidoscope of human neurotransmitters mimicking skittering leaflet edges mimicking ragged coastline contours, visible only from thousands of miles above earth. Finding the perfect bicycle in a strangers ancient aunt’s shed, just when the soles of your boots are starting to flap. Waking in the night, nauseous and shaking, nightmares of lovers half a country away, freshly pounding in your heart. Eight separate license plates telling you the traffic forecast is “EW”. Voices in the leaves, on the wind; an early heron migrant in lamplight, calling you to come out and play in the last snowfall of March.

That is Magic; Perfect, Inexplicable Energy, the Potential of Anything to Become Anything Else. It is Patient, It is Indifferent, and it is Inescapable.

I want you to believe in Magic.

That is the whole point of this project, my art, and my divinatory practice. I want you to see the world anew, with eyes that take in both the horror and the sublime in equal measure, knowing it is all there for you to harness for yourself. I want you to feel the power in the objects, pictures, garments, and words I give to you, and recognize that same power within you. I want your imagination to unfold till you are the person of your smallest, youngest dreams.

I want you to feel something, and I want that feeling to be Magic.

Until you believe in it, too.
